The practical use of electricity developed at the end of the 19th century.
The first applications were dedicated to public lighting and the generation of motion in factories. The latter could abandon the plants born near the natural sources of energy, such as torrents, rivers and lakes, to get closer to the urban areas where the workers needed to carry out their activities.
